How to Connect Your Piano to Your PC and hear it in a Live Stream

I recently added a digital piano to my stream.

As a matter of fact, my question was how do I connect this to my PC where my viewers can hear my lack of piano playing skills in my stream and where I can hear this masterpiece through my PC headphones. I asked Piano show owners and had a variety of different answers which none had helped.

I then spent some time on Google and YouTube for some information and did not find much helpful information. One YouTuber suggested I need to buy an audio interface, yeah right. This is not a guitar. It’s a digital piano with a USB connection and I knew this was not needed. So off I went and did what I do best and how I have survived this Earth for the past 50 or so years. Good old-fashioned learning by trial and error started when I was a toddler.

The first thing I did was download Audacity and did a test as this was suggested. I could see and record myself playing the piano but could not hear it. Then I went straight to OBS. This is what I did to make this work and works like magic. It took me no more than 10 minutes to figure out the experience I had.

Things You Need for Digital Piano Playing in Stream Like Twitch

  1. A Digital Piano/Arranger that has a USB connector at the back of the piano with an available downloadable driver. This USB connector is the same you will find at the back of a printer.
  2. USB cable for step 1 above.
  3. Software Driver for your PC.
  4. OBS.

Digital Piano Buying Tip

It is very important to buy a well-known Digital Piano brand if you are going to invest in a digital keyboard piano.

Why this is important is the ease of availability of software drivers for your PC or Mac. These are found in the downloads section from the manufacturer’s website.

Another keypoint Yamaha has an awesome collection of digital Piano PSR units that are budget-friendly with USB and work effortlessly.

Before you buy any unit though make sure that the Digital Piano has a USB connector on the back or underside and the piano has an available downloadable and updated driver you can download from the manufactures website. This is the deal-breaker when buying.

How To Setup Your Stream for A Live performance

For instance, settings may change and things may not seem to work as they should. So once you are ready to go live you should be starting the relevant computers in the following order.

  1. Switch on your stream PC first.
  2. Get your stream PC ready and then open OBS.
  3. Switch on your gaming PC.
  4. If you are using Elgato capture devices make sure your audio is coming through to your stream PC from your gaming PC.
  5. Launch your game on your gaming PC. Check again if everything is working as it should and that the game and audio are all good on your stream PC.
