Initially, when I first started gaming I used a very small desk and I extended the length by using my woodworking skills. I did this by adding boards and increasing the height by adding spacers to the legs of the desk to increase the desk height. Some of you reading this may relate and may have done something similar.
There are a ton of options available today for gaming desks.
The question is do you need to purchase a desk being marketed as a Gaming Desk with the extra price tag?
Types of Desks
There are a few types of desks you can use. Some are suitable for gaming and some are not.
Writing Desks
These types of desks are generally small in size and are only really suited for laptop work. You are limited to the desktop room and you can not alter the desktop height.
Ikea Skarsta Sit/Stand Desk
After completing my research, I purchased the legendary Ikea Skarsta desk sit/stand for $269 Aussie Dollars back in October 2020. This desk is available in a number of different colors for the desktop.
This desk includes a manual up and down handle as well.
One amazing part of this purchase was a Sunday delivery and the other is this desk comes with a 10-year warranty.
This desk is amazing. The desk legs are solid welded steel with a replaceable desktop option if you ever need to replace the top. The size I purchased was 160cm x 80cm. This desk also has an option where you can manually change the desk height which comes in handy. An automated up and down option is available but not necessary.

Currently, I use this desk with a 3 monitor setup and the weight is no issue. Similiar desks sell for more than $400 Australian Dollars.
A popular gaming brand that is selling a similar Gaming Desk that has RGB lighting sells for in excess for $1600 Australian Dollars.
